How to Build a Cheeseboard That Steals the Show

Whether you’re hosting an elegant soirée or simply treating yourself, a cheeseboard is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

A truly standout cheeseboard isn’t just delicious – it’s an art piece. With the right mix of flavours, textures, and aesthetics, your cheeseboard will steal the show before anyone even takes a bite. Here’s how to create a showstopper that tastes as good as it looks.

 1. Selection and Quantity

A good cheeseboard is like a good playlist – it needs variety and a mix of hits. Aim for a mix of hard, aged, soft, and creamy cheeses. Include contrasting flavours – from strong to mild – and ensure a visually diverse selection – think red, white and blue! Adding cheeses from different regions can take your board from good to exceptional.

Plan for around 100 –150g of cheese per guest, plus accompaniments. This ensures everyone can enjoy without running short.

2. Presentation

A visually stunning cheeseboard begins with thoughtful arrangement. Anchor the board by placing larger wedges or rounds towards the centre. Fan out smaller portions around them for balance. Use a separate knife for each cheese to keep the flavours distinct. Add height with small bowls for honey and cherry compote, and don’t forget to include bread, crackers and fruit toast around the edges. Extra points if you label each cheese.

3. Garnish

Your cheeseboard isn’t just about taste; it’s also about creating an Instagram-worthy display. Fresh or dried fruit will add a vibrant pop of colour, whilst rosemary sprigs, nuts, or quince discs elevate the visual appeal. For a festive touch, consider quince discs, edible flowers or even gold leaf for a truly special occasion.

4. Serving Temperature

Allow the harder cheeses to come to room temperature for about an hour before serving. This brings out their full flavours and makes it easier to cut and serve. Softer cheeses such as Camembert or Vacherin  Mont d’Or can be taken out nearer to serving so they don’t become too warm, too soon – give these around 30 minutes to soften up to perfection. Your guests (or just you – no judgement) will thank you for it.

With these tips, your cheeseboard will be as impressive to look at as it is to eat – a true centrepiece for any occasion. Get ready to be asked, “Where did you get this cheese?” all night long!
